Three conmen arrested with over 200kgs of fake minerals

Rwanda National Police (RNP) has called on the public to be wary of fraudsters, who employ various unscrupulous means to defraud unsuspecting people.

According to Police, such conmen may sometimes use indirectly or even directly tricky means to defraud unsuspecting individuals.

The call was made by the Central Region Police Spokesperson, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Emmanuel Hitayezu as he reacted to the arrest of three people who were caught as they attempted to sell 212kgs of fake minerals valued at Rwf2.5million to two unsuspecting businessmen

The suspects arrest in connection with the con have been identified as André Habakurama, Philbert Rugembabahizi and Jacques Munyarugendo

SSP Hitayezu pointed out that Police acted on information that there were con artists attempting to sell fake minerals to two businessmen

“We worked with detectives of Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB), arrested the suspects seized the invaluable stones. They are currently held at Gisozi Police station as RIB investigates the case farther,” said the spokesperson.

He added that; “This is fraud and is punishable under article 318 of the penal code.”

The article states that; “Any person who intentionally obtains a property belonging to another person, fraudulently or by using false names or qualities, to give rise to hope or fear of harm and obtains a part or whole of a fortune shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of three to five years and a fine of between Rwf3 million and Rwf5 million.”

The spokesperson urged the public to always be conscious about people who may want to offer them services or sell them something at a very cheap price. “There are higher chances that  such  persons are attempting to con you.”
