Brussels: Commissariat rejects asylum application from Rwandan Involved In Death of Ten UN Peacekeepers

The Belgian Commissioner General for Refugees and Stateless Persons (CGRS) rejected the asylum application from Bernard Ntuyahaga on Monday.

Ntuyahaga was sentenced to 20 years in prison by the court of assizes in 2007 for his role in the murder of ten Belgian paratroopers in Kigali in 1994.

Ntuyahaga has served his sentence and resides in the closed center since June.

He confirmed to Media that his application was rejected, according to his own statement on the basis of the UN Refugee Convention.

Ntuyahaga says he will lodge an appeal with the Council for Aliens Disputes.

In principle, the ex-major should now be deported to Rwanda.

He fears that he will be murdered there.

Ntuyahaga had said earlier that he wanted to go to Denmark, where relatives live.

Major Bernard Ntuyahaga is a Rwandan army officer convicted by a Belgian court for the murders of ten United Nations peacekeepers at the start of the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi.
