Development Journalism Awards 2018: TOPAFRICANEWS mentioned in 30 Popular Online Media

The Rwanda Governance Board (RGB) has announced that only 30 online Media were mentioned during the Vote for Most Popular online Media in Rwanda.

The announcement was made on Wednesday at the Development Journalism Awards Ceremony which took place on 7th/November/ 2018 in Kigali.

The Number of online media in Rwanda has been growing since 2009 and despite having hundreds of online News websites in Rwanda at least 80 news website are registered by Rwanda Media Commission.

This year RGB conducted online survey to find out who is most popular news website in Rwanda.

Respondents had to choose the website they think is most popular through online voting

Announcing the results, RGB said that during the survey only 30 online Media were mentioned by the voters.

A list of 30 online media showed that TOPAFRICANEWS.COM is among those thirty popular news websites.

TOPAFRICANEWS.COM is only Five month since it was launched in May 2018.

As usual IGIHE.COM is still Rwanda’s most popular News website and it was awarded in that category.

IGIHE .com is a Nine Year Old News website and it has a quite impressive traffic.

The Survey showed that the total number of online voters were 1,964 made of 26% female and 74% Female.

Their Geographic distribution was 93.5% from Rwanda and 6.5% from outside.

“Though it was a completion you are all the winners.” Said One UN Country Director who was speaking at the awarding ceremony preceded by Media dialogues in the morning.

Apart from the popularity of News websites, the RGB and partners also awarded other categories ranging from Radio, TV, and Print and Online media as well.

This year 2018 the total entries were 846 with 43 participating Media Houses.

Categories with the highest number of entries include Feature, Documentary or Magazine which were 94, Gender and Child Rights: 94 with dominant media being online.

80.8% male competed while the number of the female was 19.2%.

The Journalist of the year 2018 is Donah Mbabazi from the New Times.

Speaking at the event, Aldo Havugima, Head of Radio Rwanda at the Rwanda Broadcasting Agency said that “These awards are most important for our job…Let these awards be a motivation to do better.”
