Rwanda Cabinet approved the Establishment of Water Resources Board
The Government of Rwanda has approved the establishment of the Water Resources Board.
The approval was made during an Extraordinary Cabinet Meeting chaired by His Excellency the President of the Republic, Paul KAGAME on Monday 19th November 2018.
Water Resources Managers commended the move as a sign of the Government commitment to the sustainable Management of Water Resources.
The Department of Water Resources in Rwanda takes the lead in coordinating stakeholders involved in implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 6 which focuses on ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
The Water Resources Department is in charge among others to implement Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) Agenda of the National Policy on Water Resources.
One of the key actions is to coordinate various stakeholders involved in the water sector including those working in domestic water supply, irrigation, ecosystems, financing, transboundary water level, and infrastructures development.
Once the Board is in place it is believed that “It will contribute a lot the implementation of the management of water resources at a catchment level” as experts noted that “Managing water resources at a catchment level” will address most of the negative impacts on water resources.
The Government of Rwanda and the Kingdom of Netherlands are working closely to make IWRM approach one of the long-term solutions to the Management of water Resources.
