Rwandan Genocide suspect may soon appear before the Assize Court of Paris

In France, a Rwandan doctor, Sosthène Munyemana, may be soon brought before the Assize Court of Paris for “genocide” and”crimes against humanity” committed in Rwanda in 1994.

This doctor is a refugee in France, since September 1994. He was indicted on 14 December 2011 and since then he has been under judicial supervision.

In the early 1990s, Sosthenes Munyemana was a gynecologist in Butare, southern Rwanda.

The French justice accuses him of having supported the genocidal government through, in particular, his engagement in the security committee in Tumba Sector where they organized a hunt against Tutsi civilians.

This doctor would then “took the responsibility to hold the key of the office of the sector, the main local administrative building, to enclose the Tutsi who will disappear after their transfer to the gendarmerie brigade of Butare,” the judge continues.

Sosthenes Munyemana is being prosecuted for”genocide”, “crimes against humanity” and “complicity in genocide”.

Placed under judicial control since December 2011, he practices as an emergency doctor in a hospital in southwestern France.

His lawyers intend to appeal the judge’s decision.
