Rwanda: Low Knowledge hinders Family Planning Headway

Kigali,17th December 2018: The Rwanda Bio-Medical Centre (RBC) says that Low knowledge on Family Planning among population is among the key challenges that are hindering the progressive use of family Planning methods available in almost health centers in Rwanda.

This was revealed on Monday 17th December 2018 during Media training on Reproductive Health Reporting.

The training which kicks off on Monday and ends on 24th December 2018 was organized by the Rwanda Media High Council, Rwanda Bio-Medical Centre (RBC) with the support from the United Nation Development Programme.

Speaking at the theoretical training session which will be followed by Practical session to take place in South, East and Northern parts of Rwanda, both the Media High Council and RBC mentioned that “lack of adequate information on Family Planning is taking back the progress of FP methods use.”

The Media High Council Secretary General, Peacemaker Mbungiramihigo noted that the training is in line with capacity building among media practitioners and seeking ways of putting in place a strong media network that will help the Government to disseminate information related to Family Planning as well as other Health issues.

Joel Serucaca in charge of Family Planning at RBC told media that “Family Planning is a program that enables citizens and the country in general to put in place measures that lead to the slowdown of unsustainable population growth and resulting negative impacts on the economy, environmental and national development effort.”

He said that Rwanda eyes 60% of permanent use of Family Planning methods among married women by2024 adding that currently the unmet need for contraception as one of the methods used remains too high as it stands at 19% of those who need FP services but fail to get them due to uncontrolled increasing number of population in need.

“Some time health centers fail to satisfy the needs of those who need health services because of the great number of people for instance being served by one health worker,

“That’s why we keep encouraging people to give birth to fewer children so the Government is also able to provide good health care services to them.” He said

There are several methods for family planning which include use of implants, pills, use of condom, vasectomy and any other methods.

RBC is optimistic that as the years go on the number of people using Family planning methods of their choice will significantly increase.

Current statistics show that birth per women stands at 4.2 children.

“The Government is committed to increase FP methods Choice including access to long-term methods by addressing missed opportunities in post-partum periods.” Serucaca revealed.
