UN General Assembly elects Moroccan as judge to int’l court for Rwanda and Yugoslavia
UNITED NATIONS (Rahnuma): The UN General Assembly on Tuesday elected Mustapha El Baaj of Morocco as a judge to the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, which deals with cases left over by the UN tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and for Rwanda.
In a vote on Tuesday morning, the Moroccan jurist won 99 votes, beating his contender, Guenael Mettraux of Switzerland, who won 86 votes.
The election of Mustapha El Baaj completed the roster of judges of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, following the election of Yusuf Aksar of Turkey last month.
Twenty-three of the 25 judges were re-appointed by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in June 2018, leaving two vacancies.
All the judges, including the two newly elected ones, will see their terms of office expire on June 30, 2020.
The mechanism was established by the UN Security Council in 2010 to perform the remaining functions of the tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and for Rwanda.
