A Message of Gen. Kabarebe that still makes sense today

Gen. James Kabarebe is the Advisor of President Kagame on Security matters

Seven years ago, Former Rwandan Minister of Defense who is the current Advisor of President Kagame on Security matters assured that FDLR rebels can’t resist even an hour on Rwandan territory adding that rebels cannot succeed in capturing Rwanda.

The Former Defence Minister General James Kabarebe was giving a detailed explanation of the events that led up to the creation of the M23 rebel group, saying it emerged out of the failure of the DRC government.

Commenting on the accusation that Rwanda was supporting DRC rebels, Kabarebe noted that Rwanda has worked hard to encourage peace in the Congo and accused the international community of deliberating ignoring the role played by Rwanda in building peace in the DRC.

’We have had different efforts including Umoja Wetu and brokering the 2009 deal but no one has ever recognised this’ he said.

Umoja Wetu was an operation jointly mounted by RDF and Congolese troops aimed at routing negative forces including the FDLR out of Congo.

Cooperation still Important

Even if President Joseph Kabila is no longer DRC President but that cannot be an obstacle to the continued effort of pacifying the region as well as continued efforts to eradicate armed groups mostly found in the Eastern DRC which are threats to neighboring countries. We have been reading in Media about the expectations that will take place once the newly elected President of DRC Félix Antoine Tshilombo Tshisekedi takes the helm of this neighboring country.

The question “What can we expect…” have a lot of answers that may be good or bad. However what is good answer for the good of the region is sustainable cooperation among our regional countries.

Kabarebe at that time said “Cooperation with the DRC army continued today. For example, the joint intelligence team which up to now remains operational in Goma – including another mechanism called the joint intelligence fusion centre’.

Based on that Joint cooperation in sharing intelligence information, highlights the Need for the continuous intelligence information sharing as a necessity while the region is to focusing much on development project that will benefit the growing number of population that will be saved by the good environment in doing business between our countries.
