Burundi, Rwanda relations not on the Agenda of EAC Heads of State Summit

The East African Community Heads of State Summit will finally take place on Friday after failing to happen twice last year after Burundi declined to send a representative.

The region’s presidents are expected to land in the Tanzanian city of Arusha – where the EAC Secretariat is headquartered – ahead of the summit.

Fears were rife that the Summit would be aborted a third time due to frosty Rwanda-Burundi ties, but the former confirmed that President Paul Kagame would be in attendance as planned.

“The agenda will be that of November 30 and we don’t intend to add any other item. And the Burundi/Rwanda relations are not on the agenda. We are dealing with the issue bilaterally with Uganda,” The EastAfrican newspaper quotes State Minister for EAC Affairs Olivier Nduhungirehe.

The meeting is expected to focus on regional security, trade and the progress report on the adoption of Political Confederation as a Transitional Model to the East African Political Federation.

The leaders will also discuss the possible admission of Somalia into the bloc.
