VIDEO: Will Payment for Ecosystem Services Work in Rwanda?

Upper Nyabarongo Catchment is one of the four demonstration catchment where the Ministry of Environment with the support from the Kingdom of the Netherlands through Water for Growth Programme has been implementing the Integrated Water Resources Management Approach.

Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) has been adopted by the Government of Rwanda as its overall approach to water resources management.

The IWRM practices have contributed a lot since the start of Water for Growth Early Implementation Projects in Upper Nyabarongo catchment as well as in three other demonstrations catchments which include Sebeya, Muvumba and Nyabugogo catchment.

Billions of money were invested and yielded in the positive results economically and mindset change on the protection of Water resources.

However, there are still challenges that need strong landscape restoration solutions especially on the matter of water catchment management.

To move on, Rwanda and Costa Rica have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Environmental Cooperation with a focus on payment for ecosystem services.

The MoU has been supported by the International Union for Conservation Network (IUCN) and Conservation International.

Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) is an approach that promotes good management of environmental resources to provide ecological services.
