American tourist abducted from Ugandan national park

Kampala – Unknown armed men have abducted an American woman and her Ugandan driver from a national park in western Uganda, the East African country said on Wednesday.

“The woman, who was part of a tour group, was kidnapped on Tuesday, near the Katoke Gate in Queen Elizabeth National Park,’’ the government’s public relations unit said in a statement.

According to the Uganda Media Centre, four other tourists were left in the park unharmed.

Deputy police spokeswoman Polly Namaye, told dpa that the abductors demanded a ransom equivalent to 500,000 dollars.

“Police, the military and the Uganda Wildlife Authority have mounted a joint search operation for the two abductees,’’ the media centre said.

It said the motive for the abduction was, however, unclear.

The Queen Elizabeth Park, is popular with tourists for its large population of elephants, lions and hippos.

The park borders the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where numerous rebel groups from Uganda, Congo and Rwanda are based. (dpa/NAN)
