President Kagame Expected In Egypt for a High Level Meeting on Sudan and Libya

Two African summits will be held Tuesday in Cairo under the leadership of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, the current chairman of the African Union (AU), to urgently discuss the crises in Sudan and Libya, TOPAFRICANEWS has learned

According to a statement from the Egyptian presidency on Monday, Sissi will receive his counterparts Idriss Deby (Chad), Ismail Omar Guelleh (Djibouti), Paul Kagame (Rwanda), Denis Sassou-Nguesso (Congo), Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed (Somalia) and Cyril Ramaphosa (South Africa) for a summit on Sudan, VONews reports

Another summit on Libya will gather around Mr. Sissi, the presidents of Rwanda and South Africa as well as that of Congo, Mr. Sassou-Nguesso, also chairman of the commission on Libya to the AU, as well as the chairman of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki.

These are the first meetings of African leaders at this level on Sudan and Libya.

Ethiopian, South Sudanese, Ugandan, Kenyan and Nigerian officials will participate in the discussions.

The African leaders will discuss “the evolution of the situation in Sudan”, where the protest movement continues after the removal of President Omar al-Bashir by the army, as well as the means of “curbing the crisis” in Libya, where Marshal Khalifa Haftar launched an offensive against the capital Tripoli, said the Egyptian presidency.

The summit on Sudan “aims to discuss (…) the most appropriate means to cope with the changing situation and contribute to stability and peace,” the source said.

The meeting on Libya “will address ways to stem the current crisis and revive the political process and the elimination of terrorism,” she added.
