RIB, Media seek mutual partnership to Prevent crimes

RIB and Media seek partnership in crime prevention

Rwanda Media Commission (RMC) has asked the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) to share key investigation techniques to the Investigative Journalists as a contribution to the evolution of Investigative Journalism in Rwanda.

The request was made on Monday during a media session where RIB, RMC and Legal Aid Forum and Media fraternity were interacting on the partnership in crime prevention.

Speaking at the event, the Chairperson of Rwanda Media Commission, Cleophas Barore said “Partnership is important when we consider the Media Professionalism. We all want a free society that also gives freedom to journalists,” Barore said

However, Barore noted that there should be also partnership in capacity building targeting investigative Journalists.

“You have Investigative techniques that you use while searching for proofs. We believe that your techniques can also help investigative journalists.” Barore told officials at Rwanda Investigation Bureau as the two partners are seeking strong partnership in crime prevention.

“What is important here is that the journalists do their job professionally, that they do stories that contribute to the prevention of the crimes, but do that following Journalism ethics.” Barore explains.

The Secretary General of Rwanda Investigation Bureau Col. Ruhunga Jeannot said that “The role the media has played so far is commendable.”

We are aware that without the contribution of the Media RIB cannot fully achieve its mandate.” He added

Speaking at the event Dr. Lonzen Rugira as a researcher said “If RIB is expecting the partnership from Media, there have to be an expectation that the Media also expect from RIB.”

“The Media and Investigators meet on the same case but with different purpose. So there should be a natural partnership between RIB and Media and the Natural partnership is the outcome.”

RIB believes that the partnership with Media will yield positive results with shared Interests as the two institutions are responsible for the society’s well-being and the well-being of citizens.

Until March 2019, RIB recorded over thirty nine thousands crimes countrywide.

Some crimes were known after the Media reported them in their respective channels.

However, Col. Ruhunga said “There is an important decline of crimes due to the efforts put in sensitizing citizens on crime prevention and reporting.”

The City of Kigali recorded the highest number of crimes followed by the Eastern Province.

Gasabo District has the highest number of crimes in the city of Kigali.
