LAF simplifies Access to Legal services in Rwanda

Since its establishment in 2006, the Legal Aid Forum (LAF) has advocated actively for access to justice for vulnerable and poor people. One result is the adoption of the Law on the Bar allowing lawyers from civil society organizations to represent clients in court.

It is with this background that the Legal Aid Forum provides free legal representation to poor and vulnerable people with a focus on prevention and early resolution of legal problems.

As Rwanda is developing faster and the trend of current communication technologies, LAF has decided to simplify the way citizens can have access to Legal and Justice Information.

On Monday, Kananga Andrew the Executive Director of Legal Aid Forum told members of the Press that despite effort made by the Government in sensitizing citizens on Laws, it was found that only 4% of Rwandans have knowledge of Laws.

Kananga said “It is obvious that there is a need to put more efforts in sensitization” adding that “We cannot ask citizens to prevent crimes while the knowledge of Laws is at the low level.”

He said that in this regards LAF has put in place means where citizens can get information and request assistance on Laws only by calling 845 or dial *845# using MTN Network and follow the guidelines.
