Rwanda: MoH, MSH celebrate the completion of a Five Year USAID-funded health project

Rwanda’s Ministry of Health (MoH) and Management Science for Health (MSH) have celebrated the completion of a Five Year USAID-funded Health System Strengthening (RHSS) Project.

Implemented by MSH, the USD $24,892,688 project was launched in November 2014 with the objective of achieving strengthened and expanded performance of the Rwandan health system at national, decentralized and community levels.

Speaking at the celebration Event which took place in Kigali on Tuesday 14th May 2019, Jacob Hughes, MSH Senior Director for Health Systems noted that RHSS Project focused on Selected Health Systems Building Blocks which include Leadership & Governance, Health Financing & Private Sector Engagement, Quality Improvement & Accreditation, M&E, Data Use, Research and Knowledge Management.

He noted that the Project’s vision is to contribute to Rwanda’s multi-sectorial Vision 2020 in order to achieve equitable and sustainable health services for all Rwandans.

In her remarks, Rwanda’s Minister of Health Dr. Diane Gashumba commended the achievements made during the project implementation adding that “the project’s achievements strategically contributed to the enhancing quality of Health care services in Rwanda.”

She thanked MSH Leadership for supporting the vision of Rwanda’s Ministry of Health and the Government of Rwanda in Particular.

“They have improved the M&E, Health System Research, training and knowledge based practices….”Dr. Gashumba said.

She also noted that the RHSS Project has enabled the harmonization of Medical coding procedures as a foundation of automated billing and payment mechanisms.

Alain Joyal, the MSH Country Director

Alain Joyal, the MSH Country Director said that “It is an honor to be entrusted with Health Systems Strengthening responsibility in the past five years which was jointly implemented with the Government of Rwanda, USAID and other partners.”

Again we are happy that MSH was again selected to continue supporting the health Sector and we are ready to move all forwards together.” Alain Joyal told media in an Interview.

Present was also the USAID Head of Mission in Rwanda Leslie Marbury who said that “It is really a celebration for the past five years,…and we thank you for the honored partnership.”

“USAID is here to really support Rwanda’s vision and everybody knows that Rwanda is a country with long vision. So we are running to keep up with them….

“for USAID we see that vision and we all know that to achieve that vision we need a healthy population.” She said

“So the Majority of US Government investment in Rwanda goes to health for that healthy population and the backbone of that is the strong health system.” Leslie explained.

Rwanda is building a high-quality health care system that is accessible, accountable, affordable and reliable for the people who need it most.

The Country’s Health Sector Policy (2015) states the overall vision of the health sector as to pursue an integrated and community-driven development process through the provision of equitable, accessible and quality health care services.

However Health Minister said there are much to be done to achieve the country’s health vision.
