Kamonyi: Leaders Urged to be role model in adhering to Ejo Heza Saving

Kamonyi district officially launches Ejo Heza long term saving scheme

Opinion leaders in Kamonyi District have been called to be role model to the rest of community in adhering to Ejo Heza long term saving scheme, an initiative that will provide pension both to salaried and non-salaried people.

This initiative was launched in December last year in order to help Rwandans including those in informal sector to have access to pension services and retire with dignity.

Kamonyi has launched it officially on this Monday 3 June 2019.

Leaders from cell up to the district level, representatives of schools and health centres, members of private sector and civil society, among others attended the official launch at the district headquarters.

“If leaders participate, others will learn from them and the citizens’ participation will be high in this district. We know well that for every important programme to succeed, leaders have to play a remarkable role. Before sensitising, they must get much information, so let’s have a good start”, the coordinator of Ejo Heza in Southern Province, Jacques Rutsinga said.

“We can’t sensitize the public about what we don’t trust and do. We first have to own it”, the Mayor of Kamonyi District, Alice Kayitesi added.

Only 8 per cent of about 5.4 million in the workforce population countrywide have access to saving through pension schemes. The remaining 92 percent mainly in informal sector are excluded.

Kamonyi District has 382 active members of Ejo Heza with savings of Rwf 1, 6 million compared to Rwf 386 million targeted in the first year at the national launch.

There are some benefits of membership in Ejo Heza even before retirement age that include getting  40 per cent of one’s saving for different purposes such as housing, paying school fees for oneself or his/her children or using  it as collateral to get loans, whenever savings are over Rwf4 million.

The age for one to access savings under Ejo Heza saving scheme is 55 years as it has been disclosed.
