Gicumbi: SOS Kigali trains Youth on How to address human security issues

SOS Children’s Village Kigali has closed a youth camp session of secondary school students during which participants learnt how to deal with human security concerns.

During the camp, youth took part in practical sessions held in Bukure Sector, Gicumbi District.

The week long camp of nearly 100 teenagers beneficiaries of SOS Children’ Village Kigali, took place at Petit Séminaire St Dominique Savio de Rwesero and was closed on December 9, 2019.

It was organized to help children know what is going on in the community outside, identify problems affecting the population and the contribution they can give in solving them, SOS Children’s Village Kigali Director, Louis Ntabana,  said.

“Among the children supported by SOS Children’s Village, some live there on a daily basis, they need to explore other parts of the country and know how Banyarwanda people live. Another thing we want is to shape all the beneficiaries in a way they grow with a spirit of helping other vulnerable people around them” he said.

Apart from classroom sessions on different topics of development programs of the country, the participants of this camp helped local residents to have proper sanitation by building 16 latrines and 16 bathrooms for vulnerable families.

SOS Children’s Village Kigali had set the needed materials to build 50 latrines and bathrooms but the heavy rains and others challenges prevented the accomplishment of the action.

The remaining materials that include cements, iron sheets, nails and doors handed to the local leadership for following up the activities.

“We are happy of this support from SOS Kigali to build proper latrines for our people. It will protect them from the threat of diseases as many of the families had improper latrines whereas others hadn’t any” the Executive Secretary of Bukure Sector, Nkunzabera Sylvestre, noted.

According to him at least 100 households in Rwesero Cell had improper latrines. In the whole sector 280 families use improper latrines who must be helped to solve poor sanitation related problems that affecting them.

Kabaka Omega, the youth representative, said they all know that ‘freely they received, freely they must give.’

“This is a good initiative from SOS Children’s Village Kigali, it educated us to have the heart of helping vulnerable people around us. We are happy to be supported but we would be happier to have others supported” he said.

“The latrine we were using was in a bad condition. I and my family would be infected by diseases associated with poor hygiene. I was lucky to be supported because by the time I would build it for myself I got hospitalized together with my wife” said Kalisa Joseph resident of Rwesero  Cell.

Poor sanitation, children malnutrition and stunting, teenage pregnancies are among human security issues that affecting their wellbeing in the country.
