Rwanda Cabinet approves Angola’s Envoy in Kigali

Angolan Envoy was approved by a cabinet meeting chaired by President Paul Kagame on June 1st 2018

The Government of Rwanda has approved the agrément of Eduardo Filomeno Leiro Octávio, to represent Angola to Rwanda at the level of Ambassador, with residence in Kigali.

The approval was made during an Extraordinary Cabinet Meeting chaired by His Excellency the President of the Republic, Paul KAGAME, convened on Friday, June 1st 2018.

Rwanda, Angola Bilateral relations

In 2008 the governments of Rwanda and Angola started exploring ways of mending their relations and to initiate and strengthen economic cooperation.

This was disclosed after the Angolan Minister of Foreign Affairs met President Paul Kagame at the State House in Kiyovu.

During that time the Minister told media that “I am here to deliver a personal message to President Kagame from his Angolan counterpart (Jose Eduardo De Santos, the Then President) and we are looking at ways of strengthening cooperation especially in the economic sector,”

Rwanda has been meeting with Angola for several times to discussed the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the progress in the restoration of peace and security in the vast country’s volatile eastern region as well as the Great Lakes region as a whole.

Previously there was problem in the bilateral relationship of the two countries which stemmed on the conflict in Congo (DRC) when they took different sides of conflicting parties.

Rwanda and Angola took different sides during a war in Congo when it (Angola) allied with Zimbabwe and Namibia to support Laurent Desire Kabila to fight M23 rebel group.

Rwanda has its Embassy in Luanda, Angola at Villa Nº A111 P.O Box 10602 in the capital Luanda

In 2014 the two countries signed agreements aimed at boosting bilateral relations

During the time the Angolan Foreign Affairs Minister said “We are getting into an era of development and cooperation. Wars are far behind us and we all want peace in this region which we can only attain through mutual cooperation,”

In May 2018, a strong Angolan delegation led by Dr. Angelo de Barros Veiga, Minister of Security, was received on by the Rwandan Minister of Justice, Johnston Busingye for a working session that focused on strengthening cooperation in the field of justice.

The approval of Angolan Ambassador to Rwanda is a sign of blossoming relations between two countries.

Angola is also working closely with President Paul Kagame, the Current Chair of the African Union which headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Recently Angolan President visited France two days after President Paul Kagame met France President Emmanuel Macron in Paris.

After the visits of the two Heads of States, the Democratic Republic of Congo summoned the two Countries Envoys in this country to give explanations on what the two leaders discussed with President Macron.
