From Paris in the Office of the Secretary General of La Francophonie to the Rwandan Embassies around the world and back home, there is nothing in the hearts of many but the joy and pride among various Rwandans following the election of Dr Monique Nsanzabaganwa, who won the post of Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission.

This is only natural in Rwanda whenever one of Rwandans takes an important step or achieves an important task they must inevitably show their happiness and show their support for him or her.

Among those who expressed their special gratitude to Dr. Nsanzabaganwa include Mrs. Louise Mushikiwabo, Secretary-General of the Organization of French-Speaking Countries, where she said: “Many congratulations to my deep-rooted colleague, a wonderful woman and very capable Monique Nsanzabaganwa, newly elected new vice-president of the African Union Commission! Shine on my country Rwanda!!”

The Israeli ambassador to Rwanda and a close friend of Rwanda, Ron Adam immediately congratulated Dr. Nsanzabaganwa in the following words: “Congratulations for your election to the very important post and many wishes for success!”

At the Rwandan Embassies around the world, Ambassador Olivier Nduhungirehe, Rwanda’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of The Netherlands said “Congratulations to Intwararumuri Dr. Monique Nsanzabaganwa for her landslide victory in the election of the Deputy Chairperson of the AU Commission, With the deserved re-election of Moussa Faki as Chairperson, the AU Commission’s helm is in very good hands.”

With a  joyful heart, this was evident in the sentiments of Ange Kagame, the daughter of President Paul Kagame who also thanked Dr. Nsanzabaganwa for her election in a tweet that shows clapping hands for the achievements.

Rwanda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also congratulates Dr. Monique Nsanzabaganwa on her election as Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission, elected by 42 votes out of 55 member states.

The Women, Gender and Development Directorate at the African Union Commission also tweeted “The Women, Gender and Development Directorate wishes to congratulate Chairperson Moussa Faki on his unanimous re-election. Congratulations to Dr. Monique Nsanzabaganwa on your election as the Deputy Chairperson. Great to have a woman at the helm of leadership.”

The joy has spread beyond Rwanda’s borders to even friends’ countries of Rwanda, including Namibia, where the President Hage G. Geingob said: “I congratulate my dear brother Moussa Faki on his brilliant re-election as Chairperson of the African Union Commission. I also extend in the same vein warm felicitations to Monique Nsanzabaganwa on her election as Deputy Chair of the AUC. Congratulations.”

In addition to politicians, the Central Bank of Rwanda also sent a message of appreciation to Ms Nsanzabaganwa, which says “Our own Deputy Governor Monique Nsanzabaganwa has been elected Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission. A big win for our country. Congratulations to you and Rwanda at large”

Monique Nsanzabaganwa contested for the position against Uganda’s Pamela Kasabiiti Mbabazi, who garnered 10 votes, and Hasna Barkat Daoud of Djibouti who picked up 2 votes.

After all the messages of thanks as well as the ones that are still coming, Dr. Monique Nsanzabaganwa also said after her election, as her tweet quoted: “My very sincere gratitude and appreciation for the trust and honor that the Heads of States and Government of the African Union have bestowed on my country and in my person. I commit to serve with dedication and to the best of my ability under your wise guidance.”

This is not the first time a Rwandan woman has been employed internationally.  There are so many Rwandan women working in various international organizations including the UN, banks, human rights organizations, and many more.

However, this also shows that Rwanda has come a long way in the advancement of women, by empowering them so that they can compete on the international stage.
