Sebeya river flooding damages over 170 houses in Rubavu

The Sebeya River has once again flooded, destroying 172 houses, damaging three hectares crops and other infrastructures.

The flooding was due to Heavy rains that fell on 9th February, 2021 in western Rwanda, in Rubavu District

The Rubavu District Administration has admitted that the rains fell on February 9, 2021, damaging many things including roads, houses and crops.

Rubavu District Mayor Gilbert Habyarimana said the water from the Sebeya River destroyed six houses and damaged 166 others.

He added that despite the heavy rains, no one was killed. “No one was killed or injured but six houses were completely destroyed and 166 inundated.”

He said the rains damaged three hectares of crops in community farms and two roads in Kanama and Nyundo sectors.

Mayor Habyarimana Gilbert said six families had been severely affected by the rain, and now are housed in the neighborhood, urging residents to continue prevention measures to avoid further damages.

As part of a comprehensive solution to the flood problem caused by the Sebeya River, the Director of the Rwanda Water Resources Board, Prime Ngabonziza, told The New Times that there is a project to build a dam on the river.

He said the first dam under construction to continue to address the issue has reached its final stage.

Work on the construction of the second dam and water pipelines is expected to begin in March 2021. In addition to resolving the flood problem, Ngabonziza said the dams will also help prevent erosion.

A few days ago, floods hit Sebeya’s neighbors after a project was launched to protect it.

The Sebeya River has often caused floods to residents of Rubavu District in Karambo, Nkomane and Rusongati cells in Kanama Sector.
