IUCN Rwanda, RFA sign an agreement for FLR project in Eastern Province

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Rwanda has signed an agreement with Rwanda Forestry Authority for Forests and Landscape Restoration in Nyagatare, Kirehe and Kayonza Districts in the Eastern Province of Rwanda. The agreement was signed on Tuesday, February, 16th 2021.

During the signing event, Rwanda Forestry Authority was represented by its Director General Mugabo Jean Pierre while IUCN Rwanda was represented by Charles Karangwa, Regional Technical Coordinator, Forest Landscape and Livelihoods who is also IUCN Rwanda Country Representative.

Funded by The International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Environment Ministry, the project will be implemented by IUCN, GIZ, World Resources Institute, FAO, World Bank, World Wildlife Fund and AUDA-NEPAD.

Forest landscape restoration (FLR) is the ongoing process of regaining ecological functionality and enhancing human well-being across deforested or degraded forest landscapes. FLR is more than just planting trees – it is restoring a whole landscape to meet present and future needs and to offer multiple benefits and land uses over time.

In Rwanda, the FLR project in the three districts mentioned above will restore 25,000 ha impacting more than 160,000 people.

According to the agreement, Rwanda Forestry Authority will receive Rwf1,3billion in grants between 2021-2024 to implement landscape restoration in the mentioned districts.

The project is also implemented in Malawi, Cameroon and Kenya.

According to a document prepared by IUCN and seen by TOP AFRICANEWS, Huge investments are needed to achieve the ambitious restoration goals to which Rwanda committed in the context of the Bonn Challenge.

In order to address different problems that impede Forest Landscape Restoration and Sustainable Forest Management in Rwanda; there is a need for financial mechanisms and incentives to encourage farmers and investors to adopt practices and activities that will overcome obstacles for forest restoration and thus enhance better management of landscapes in general.

To address issues related to Forests management, the Rwandan government has set up Rwanda Forestry Authority to implement policies, laws, strategies and Government decisions related to the management of forests.

The Authority which is a line agency of the Ministry of Environment works closely with various stakeholders to continue to expand and conserve forested areas.
