Dr. Biruta on the arrest of Agatha Habyarimana

Agatha Kanziga Habyarimana, the wife of former Rwandan President Habyarimana Juvenal who has been in France for more than 20 years but is suspected of involvement in the Genocide against the Tutsi, was one of the members of the so-called ‘Akazu’ that organized and ensured the implementation of the genocide against the Tutsi.

Rwanda has issued arrest warrants but the country has refused to try her or send her to Rwanda for trial.

Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Vincent Biruta has told France 24 that Rwanda is confident of France’s efforts to arrest her and other genocide suspects who are still hiding on the country’s soil.

“We hope that the perpetrators of the genocide on French soil will be prosecuted, tried or extradited to Rwanda, first of all, that they will be prosecuted,” he said. “I don’t want to talk about an individual because she is not a single person on French soil, there are other genocide suspects still on French soil, we hope they will be prosecuted and brought to justice either in France or sent to Rwanda. “
