Nyandungu Urban Wetland Eco-Tourism Park where IFAK students visited to discover scientific facts connecting the classroom experience with real-life and authentic experience

On the 15th June, 2021, Students from Senior 6 MCB and 5 Senior MCB at the “INSTITUT DE FORMATION APPOSTOLIQUE DE KIMIHURURA”, (IFAK), have visited Nyandungu Urban Wetland Eco-Tourism Park with a view to connecting the classroom experience with real-life and authentic experience.

According to the Biology Teacher, Mr. UWISHEMA Epimaque, the visit was organized to help learners discover the scientific facts from the field and this helps them understand the lessons better because they have also experienced it.

“As each scientific course includes as well as theoretical part and practical part, it is this reason why in practice the Salesian school “INSTITUT DE FORMATION APPOSTOLIQUE DE KIMIHURURA” organized the field trip in Biology course for the students of senior 6MCB and senior 5MCB which took place on 15/06/2021 at NYANDUNGU URBAN WETLAND ECO-TOURISM PARK” Mr. Uwishema explained in a report submitted after field trip.

He said “Educational Field Trip plays a vital role in the school curriculum, which serves a wide range of benefits in several ways including learning and teaching. One of them is that they help students to learn through authentic experience and can be an interesting way to explore new things for both the learners and teachers.”

IFAK School is one of the best schools in Rwanda. The school is part of the works of the Salesians of Don Bosco and continues to do its utmost to ensure that the students are given the knowledge that will enable them to reach their life goals while at the same time continue to contribute to the society’s socio-economic transformation.

The students of Senior 5MCB under guidance of three officers from the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) on the field, emphasized the Unit 1 entitled “Interdependence between organisms within their environment” where they observed and described: Interrelationships among organisms and their effects, Inter and intraspecific relationships between organisms and part is made of components such as: Competition, (Intra and Interspecific), Parasitism, Predation, (Carnivory and Herbivory), Saprophytism, Mutualism, Commensalism as well as Significance of organisms’ interactions in nature.

While the Senior 5 MCB students looked together at the above courses, Senior 6MCB students of also under guidance of three officers from REMA on the field, emphasized on the Unit 1 entitled “Population and natural resources”, Unit 2 entitled “Concept of ecosystem” and Unit 3 entitled “Effects of human activities on ecosystems” where they observed and focused on:

Unit 1: Population and natural resources:

-Methods or techniques of measuring and estimating population density

  • Species frequency
  • Species cover
  • Line transects methods

-Natural resources (Renewable and non-renewable Resources)

Unit 2: Concept of ecosystem

-Succession

  • Primary succession
  • Secondary succession)

-Bioaccumulation / Biomagnification

Unit 3: Effects of human activities on ecosystems

-Impacts of human activities on ecosystem:

  • Agriculture
  • Deforestation: habitat destruction
  • Fragmentation ( impact of Road construction on ecosystem)
  • Mining
  • Pollution: Air pollution, Water pollution, Soil pollution
  • Bioindicators of pollution (e.g., Foliose lichens)
  • Ways of reducing pollution, poaching, forest fires

It is highly recommended to add educational school trips part of traveling where students can get abundantly memorable experience and deep knowledge of various aspects in life as well as in their courses.

It is true that the educational field trip method is a fantastic way to help students get a deeper understanding of biology subjects through real life.

Not only that, but learning in educational trips also helps students to have so much fun. With support, help, and guide from teachers, educational tours can act as a mobile class for students. This is the reason why the numerous benefits of an educational field trip for teachers cannot be overlooked.
