Key areas of focus for the new U.S ambassador to Rwanda

By DUSABEMUNGU Ange de la Victoire

Although the new U.S ambassador to Rwanda is yet to be officially announced, there are some sectors that he or she will have to focus on once his/her diplomatic career in Rwanda starts.

It is clear that the U.S diplomacy under the new Ambassador will depend on the current state of the U.S. administration and Rwanda’s area of concerns.

The United States in Rwanda has been particularly active in the areas of Health, Education, Agriculture, Trade and Security in particular.

One would think that there are specific sectors where the new ambassador will invest his country’s efforts based on the current information released by Rwanda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation

The Outgoing U.S Ambassador Peter Vrooman and Rwanda’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Dr. Vincent Biruta

On Tuesday, Dr. Vincent Biruta, Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs received outgoing U.S Ambassador Peter Vrooman, who is set to start his diplomatic career in Mozambique, and their meeting focused on a number of issues.

The Ministry tweeted shortly after the meeting that they discussed bilateral relations and cooperation in health, climate change and defense.

Although the United States in Rwanda has not invested a big portion in the environment and climate change compared to European countries such as Germany, the Netherlands and others, it is clear that this time around the U.S is about to show its role in assisting Rwanda in tackling climate change as a whole.

The U.S is one of the many countries that are taking the issue of climate change as a global threat.

In addition to this, the country is concerned with Health Challenges and Security matters as the biggest challenges of the 21st Century.

Since the eruption of COVID 19 in Rwanda, the U.S.A has continued to stay behind Rwanda through prevention and protection measures. So far, the U.S has provided more than 3 million vaccines to Rwanda.

The country is also a long-term partner of Rwanda in the field of security.

While the United States is investing heavily in the above areas, especially in tackling the effects of climate change, Rwanda will no doubt find another partner in implementing the NDCs that will help the country to transition from the current situation to an inclusive, sustainable economy driven forward by green growth and green job creation.

Taken together, the country’s efforts to limit its contribution to climate change and adapt to the consequences over the next decade will require approximately US $11 billion, made up of 5.7 billion dollars for mitigation and 5.3 billion dollars for adaptation. It is expected that this funding will come from both domestic and external sources.
