As the people of Rwanda have paused for Kwibuka – 100 days of mourning to remember the 100 days of genocidal terror in 1994, we grieve for the innocent lives lost. We remember the Tutsi victims of genocide as well as others who were killed for their opposition to the genocide. And we stand with the survivors who bore witness to these crimes.

And as a firsthand witness to the horrors, I am determined to keep the memory of those who perished front and center in our work at the United Nations. The United Nations must never again fail to act in the face of mass atrocities.

In the wake of this genocide, Rwanda – united in reconciliation – has made remarkable progress in becoming a more peaceful and prosperous nation. The United States is proud to stand with the people and Government of Rwanda in their efforts to overcome the terrible legacy of one of the darkest chapters in human history.

We take this opportunity to remember our common humanity and recommit to protecting the vulnerable, promoting accountability for atrocities, and upholding inherent human dignity. Let us renew our commitment to ensuring mass atrocities like this never occur again.
