Farmers in Nyaruguru District are proud to have found a modern maize shelter that will help them better manage their maize produce.

Farmers had difficulty finding a place to dry their maize produce, which made it difficult for them to secure their yields from diseases.

It was noticed that these farmers have enough harvests, but not finding a place to shed them can lead to losses.

These farmers in Agatorove wetland located in Mata sector cultivate an area of 80 hectares. The wetland was rehabilitated by 2021.

Mr Munyaneza Siriyake, Agronomist of Mata Sector, said that in the past the swamp was not producing as it is nowadays.

He explains that the wetland used to produce less than 400 tons.

He, however, noted that the maize shelter may be small compared to the increase in production.

He added: “farmers are usually accustomed to drying out their maize produce at home which led to deterioration of their produce.”

“Experts have shown us that damaged produce can cause illness.” He explained.

The wetland which has 749 farmers, is expected to boost community development and the district as a whole.

DUSABEMARIYA Jeanne, one of the farmers in the Agatorove wetland also says that before the they were cultivating in disorder but now things have changed.

“We used to cultivate it in disorder, but now we are cultivating it in order and we are able to get produce for the markets,” she said.

Emmanuel Murwanashyaka, the Mayor of the Nyaruguru District, told the media that the wetland appeared to be large and has good produce of maize and thus assured the people that the shelters would be increased as they wished to help them make better use of their produce.
