APAC2022: IUCN’s Director General finds Nyandungu Eco-park as a wise investment made by the Government of Rwanda

Dr. Bruno Oberle, the Director General of the International Union of Conservation of Nature has said that Nyandungu Ecopark in the City of Kigali is a wise investment made by the Government of Rwanda.
He explained that the Nyandungu protected wetland will not only benefit today’s generation but also the children of tomorrow.
During his speech delivered to over 2000 people attending the Africa Protected Areas Congress which is taking place in Kigali from Monday 18th July 2022, Dr. Bruno said“I had the honor to visit the Nyandungu Ecopark here in the City of Kigali today. This is clear. It’s so contributing so much to the life of the communities, the community of the city. It is not only a very wise investment, it is simply beautiful.”
The Nyandungu Eco-Park, an urban wetland that was restored for wildlife conservation and eco-tourism.
It is also serving as an educational site for the young people interested in environmental conservation and the science behind this conserved area.
As highlighted by Rwanda’s Prime Minister, Dr. Edouard Ngirente “This urban wetlands has been transformed from integrated wetlands to an educational and recreational facility.”
He added that Conservation of biodiversity, and sustaining Rwanda’s economy in its ecosystem are the key enablers in promoting green and sustainable development.
According to the Rwanda Development Board, the restoration of the Nyandungu wetland and creation of an eco-tourism park saw the planting of 17,000 trees made up of 55 indigenous species.
The 121 hectare park features a medicinal garden, a Pope’s Garden, five catchment ponds, three recreation ponds, an information center, a restaurant as well as 10km of walkways and bike lanes.
To sum up all conservation efforts, whether are those made in Africa or abroad, Dr. Bruno quoted Wangari Maathai, the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, saying that “We hold it to ourselves and to the next generation to conserve the environment so that we can bequeath our children and sustainable world that benefits all.”
“You will lead and be an example to the world and we will succeed together.” He added.
