Rwanda: Stewart Maginnis, IUCN Deputy Director General among Gorilla Namers for the year 2022

Stewart Maginnis, the Deputy Director General at the International Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN) among the 21 high profile people who will give names to baby gorillas during the Kwita Izina ceremony which scheduled on Friday, 2nd Sptember 2022 in Kinigi, Musanze District, in the Northern Province of Rwanda.

He is a professional farmer who holds a Masters in Forestry and Land Management from Oxford University. He even studied at the University of Manchester.

Stewart is passionate about forest conservation, community development, particularly in rural areas, and natural resource management.

He has over 28 years of experience in environmental protection, natural resource management and ecosystem protection and sustainable development in countries including Tanzania, Sudan, Ghana and Costa Rica.

In recent years, Stewart has worked with international conservation and climate change organizations.

For 12 years, he has been considered a leader who took part in the struggle for forest landscape restoration [Forest landscape restoration, FLR], where many countries in the world have joined the struggle against deforestation. It is part of the Bonn Challenge, a plan that aims to restore 150 million hectares of deforestation worldwide by 2020.

Stewart was in Rwanda in July 2022, at the IUCN Africa Protected Areas Congress.
