Rwanda targets to deploy about 2 million youth volunteers by 2024

By Justin Kayiranga

The Government of Rwanda expects to reach about two million youth volunteers who will be supporting the implementation of different policies including community policing, social welfare among others, TOP AFRICA NEWS has learnt from the Local Government Minister.

Minister Gatabazi Jean Marie Vianney, on September 5th, 2022 revealed that so far in Rwanda there are 500 thousand youth volunteers, and the government plans to increase this number in order to increase the productivity of young people in supporting the government to implement its programs.

He was speaking to the media after the official launch of a five-day training held at the Gishari Police Training School where 351 youth volunteers from the City of Kigali congregated on their role in the country’s development and what the government of Rwanda expects from them as future leaders.

“We want that in the next two years (by 2024) we will have between 1,5 million and 2 million youth volunteers who are dynamic and vibrant so that we can use them in activities that help the government to alleviate the citizens from poverty and other emergencies.” Minister Gatabazi said.

Although the government is planning to increase the number of youth volunteers, Minister Gatabazi stressed that being a volunteer does not mean that they should give up their jobs to come and volunteer for the country.

“Volunteering is not an everyday job. Volunteering is a job that you do for a day or two, but keep in mind that you should do something that helps you improve in your daily life and earns you money.” He explained.

Pudence Rubingisa, the Mayor of the City of Kigali, says that they greatly appreciate how these young people have been helping in various programs aimed at the development and well-being of the residents of this city, including their role in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a reward, Rubingisa says that “We have various government and private projects in the City of Kigali that we connect them to, and we also link them with financial institutions so that they can get resources that will help them develop. In fact, our main reward is to put them in a good environment that can make them develop faster”
