Twitter influencer conversations on #COP27 witness 150% growth in October, reveals GlobalData

The 27th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP27) will be hosted by the Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt from 06-18 November 2022.  In the run-up to the conference, Twitter influencer conversations started piling up and recorded a 150% growth around ‘COP27’ in October* over the previous month, reveals the Social Media Analytics Platform of GlobalData, a leading data and analytics platform company.

The highest rise in Twitter influencer conversations was recorded in the last week of October, when the latest report of UN Climate Change stated that the global CO2 emissions will go up 10.6% by 2030, on 2010 levels, compared to the assessment of 13.4% during COP26.

Smitarani Tripathy, Social Media Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “Most of the influencers’ sentiments are negative despite the improvement in the assessment of emissions as they say the global effort is still not enough to cut down the emissions to avoid the negative impact of climate change.”

Another surge in influencer conversations was witnessed in the first week of October, when the sponsorship of The Coca-Cola Company for COP27 event faced Twitter influencers’ backlash. A few environmental activists among the influencers slammed the company for greenwashing and demanded the UNFCCC to remove the company from sponsorship.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General at World Health Organization with a global score of 89, has emerged as the top voice on Twitter around COP27. Other leading voices were Ketan Joshi, a freelance writer on climate and energy; Javier Blas, Energy and commodities columnist at Bloomberg; Peter Kalmus, Climate Scientist at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory; and Mike Hudemand, Director of Communications at Canopy Planet.

Below are a few popular influencer tweets on COP27 captured by GlobalData’s Social Media Analytics Platform:

  1. Javier Blas, Energy and Commodities Columnist at Bloomberg:

“It’s just over a month for #COP27, and Saudi Aramco CEO Amin Nasser, tongue in cheek, has a particular view about the energy transition: “If you think about it, we are transitioning to coal”(According to the @IEA, global coal demand will rise to a fresh all-time high in 2023)”

  1. Ketan Joshi, freelance writer on climate and energy:

“Should serve as a very glaring warning to any company gearing up their greenwashing machine for COP27: you are being watched. And you are going to face consequences, if you lie about yourselves.”

  1. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General at World Health Organization:

“As we prepare for #COP27, remember that our fossil-fuel addiction costs lives & damages physical & mental health, esp. of young people. We must invest in more mental health support for communities dealing with climate-related hazards. https://bit.ly/3xeAHkF #WorldMentalHealthDay”

  1. Adam Vaughan, Environment Editor of The Times:

“Sobering report today from the UN ahead of #COP27

– finds global CO2 emissions will go up 10.6% by 2030, on 2010 levels

– that’s barely better than 16% increase expected on eve of #COP26

– worse of all, science says we need a 45% *cut* by 2030 to hit 1.5C climate target”

  1. Bill McGuire, Climate Scientist:

“When COP27 picks the world’s biggest plastic polluter as a sponser, what hope is there? I mean – really?”

  1. Selwin Hart,Special Adviser and Assistant Secretary-General for Climate Action at the UN:

“At #COP27, we need progress on all fronts: cutting emissions rapidly, delivering on promise to support #ClimateAction in developing countries, increasing funding for adaptation, and addressing loss & damage. We have a small window of opportunity to act and every second counts!”

*As on 28 October 2022
