By Ange de la Victoire DUSABEMUNGU

Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame has reminded that more than ever the world needs to be focused and remain committed to the promises of delivering the sustainable development goals.

President Paul Kagame was, on Monday, 12th December, 2022,  speaking at the opening of the 2022 Effective Development Co-operation Summit in Geneva.

President Kagame told World leaders that “We just can’t be repeating ourselves over and over spacing very important points and yet not moving forward on them.”

He said “Some reports indicated that the cost of meeting the SDGs targets has increased by up to 25% with new ways of doing things especially in mobilising resources and partnerships needed.”

However, he said “One area that requires special effort is better resource mobilisation among recipients.”

“For example, following a similar emphasis on agriculture, the African Union has made increased domestic financing for national health systems a priority and is tracking this on an annual basis.” He said.

President Kagame noted that “The lessons of the pandemic and current global uncertainties are teaching us that everyone, rich and poor, is affected when there is a breakdown in trust. That includes the trust between development partners, and recipients.”

From that point, President Kagame reminded that “Building a robust framework for trust has been the goal of the Global Partnership for effective development operation since its establishment more than a decade ago.”

Before concluding his remarks, President Kagame explained “Development operation that is more inclusive and open to innovative partnerships and that delivers for the people who need it most is one way to build resilient systems nationally, regionally and globally.”

The Global Partnership for Effective Development Co-operation is convening the 2022 Effective Development Co-operation Summit from 12-14 December to set the course towards new sustainable development pathways and move from commitment to action.

Taking place at the midpoint of Agenda 2030 and organized by the Co-Chairs from Bangladesh, Democratic Republic of Congo, Switzerland, and Reality of Aid – Africa, the Summit will address the challenges of increasing needs and financial demands stemming from the pandemic, conflict, climate and economic shocks around the world.

Gathering Ministers and other high-level partners from local and national governments, civil society, the private sector, multilateral development banks, and other development stakeholders, the Summit will look at how the global development co-operation landscape has changed and how we must transform the way we work together to better face the challenges of this new era.
