Rwanda: Joyous Moment as local residents end the year 2022 with access to Clean Water

TAN Reporter

Rwanda: Local residents of Gatsibo District in Kabarore Sector in Simbwa Cell are joyful to end the year with clean water, after a long time of using dirty water from swamps.

They say that it took them a lot of time and effort to get to the water in the marshland and now that they have clean water at the nearest water tap point.

Some residents say that they used to pass the night and day without cooking meals due to lack of water, which had a negative impact on the well-being of the family and the children in general.

In her testimony to the media, Ms. Mukankuranga Seraphine said: “We have not had clean water yet, we used to fetch water that flows from the swamp. Whenever we needed clean water we had to travel to Kabarore which was  a long trip that required us to have a bike or money to rent one. So now we have got a solution because we have clean water nearby.”

These residents were provided with clean water through the more than 99.8 kilometers long Minago’s wide water pipeline which has cost Rwf 1.9 billion.

The Water Supply pipeline provides clean water to 27,447 residents in four sectors namely Gitoki, Kabarore, Rugarama and Remera.

Gatsibo District has now reached a rate of 75.7% in providing clean water to the residents.

The government of Rwanda has prioritized the achievement of universal WASH coverage as a critical enabler of improved nutrition, good health, and economic growth in the country.

Rwanda has established a goal of 100% universal water coverage by 2024.

Statistics show that 1 in 3 people, or 33% of the world’s population, does not have access to clean drinking water.
