It was on Saturday this weekend that Rwandan President Paul Kagame was in Burundi to participate in the extraordinary summit of the heads of state of the East African Community.

Since his arrival in Burundi, President Kagame has been warmly welcomed in Burundi by his counterpart President Evariste Ndayishimiye .

After participating in the meeting studying the security problem in Eastern DRC, the two leaders held a tete-a-tete. Those who analyze international politics have noted that Rwanda and Burundi are enjoying good relations that were not good until recently.

In 2020, the neighbouring countries began to normalise relations, with exchanges of high-level visits.

The two countries have had sour relations for the past seven years, with Burundi closing its borders with Rwanda and banning the exportation of fruits and vegetables to Kigali from 2016.

However, since President Ndayishimiye took over power in 2020, relations between the two countries have improved significantly.

Last year, Burundi said that positive steps had been taken towards strengthening peace and security in the region.
