According to media reports, Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame has made a comment which signals the possible release of Paul Rusesabagina who was sentenced last September to 25 years in prison over terrorism charges tied to attacks carried out by the armed wing of the Rwanda Movement for Democratic Change.

President Paul Kagame announced that there are discussions on the issue of Paul Rusesabagina, who was convicted of terrorism crimes committed on Rwandan soil.

He announced this on Monday while speaking at the Global Security Forum in Doha, Qatar.

In an interview with Journalist Steve Clemons, President Kagame was asked if there is new information on the issue of Paul Rusesabagina who was sentenced to 25 years in prison for his involvement in terrorism crimes on Rwandan soil.

President Kagame said that Rwanda’s history has shown that it is a country that wants to move forward, sometimes taking decisions that some felt are impossible.

He said “I can only say there is work going on about the issue”

“We are not people who want to get stuck in one place and not make any movement forward before whatever reason,” He said.

“As you know, even in our history, when we have wanted to move on and make this progress we talked about earlier, we came to a point where we forgave the unforgivable.” Kagame explained.

“That’s how people even who got involved in the genocide and so on and so forth, most of them have found themselves back into freedom, we don’t get stuck with our past. ” He said

Foreign countries, including the United States of America, where Paul Rusesabagina was a citizen, and European countries, have been urging Rwanda to release Rusesabagina.

Rwanda denied saying that such countries were interfering with its justice.

“There is a discussion that is looking at all possible ways of resolving that issue without compromising the most fundamental aspects of that case. And I think there is always going to be a way forward.” President Kagame added.
