Seeking Justice: The Independent Candidate’s Plan to Hold European Countries Accountable for Genocide in Rwanda

The independent candidate for the position of President of the Republic in the elections scheduled for July 2024, Mpayimana Philippe, has indicated that among his plans is to prepare a complaint to be taken to the United Nations against Germany, Belgium, and France for their role in the history of Rwanda between 1894 and 1994, which ultimately led to the Genocide against the Tutsis.

Continuing his campaign activities, Mpayimana emphasized that these countries played a significant part in Rwanda’s past and are now accused of protecting those responsible for the genocide.

Mpayimana stated, “We must address this issue and seek justice. These countries must be held responsible for their involvement or lack thereof in preventing the genocide. This will be a top priority in my justice agenda.”

Unlike other genocides that have been internationally recognized, the genocide against the Tutsis in 1994 was unique as it was committed by Rwandans themselves with extreme brutality resulting in over a million deaths in just 100 days.

The root cause of the genocide is traced back to the colonial era when Rwanda was ruled by Germany and later Belgium, who exacerbated tensions among different social classes leading to division among Rwandans. This history has fueled resentment towards these countries for their role in the tragic events.

Recent attempts to seek justice include a lawsuit filed against Belgium for their alleged complicity in the genocide. The case highlights accusations of discrimination and abandonment of Tutsis during the genocide, as well as aiding perpetrators in evading justice.

While the legal battle against Belgium has faced delays and challenges, it serves as a reminder of the ongoing quest for accountability and justice for the victims of the genocide. Mpayimana’s pledge to pursue justice on an international level reflects a commitment to addressing historical injustices and seeking justice for the survivors and their families.
