5G Reaches 1.9 Billion Subscriptions Globally in Q2 2024
According to the New Ericsson Mobility Report, in the second quarter of 2024, the global mobile industry saw a significant milestone as the number of 5G subscriptions reached 1.9 billion, accounting for 22 percent of all mobile subscriptions. This growth in 5G subscriptions represents a shift in the industry as more and more consumers adopt the next generation of mobile technology.
China led the way in net additions during the quarter, with 22 million new subscriptions, followed by India with 8 million and Bangladesh with 2 million. The total number of mobile subscriptions worldwide reached close to 8.7 billion, with a net addition of 60 million subscriptions during the quarter.
Mobile broadband subscriptions also saw growth, with an increase of about 100 million, totaling 7.7 billion and representing 89 percent of all mobile subscriptions. The number of unique mobile subscribers stood at 6.5 billion, highlighting the prevalence of multiple device ownership and optimization of subscriptions for different types of calls.
While 5G subscriptions saw significant growth, 4G subscriptions continued to decline during the quarter, with a reduction of 25 million as subscribers migrated to the newer technology. The total number of 4G subscriptions is around 5.2 billion, representing around 60 percent of all mobile subscriptions.
With over 320 communications service providers launching commercial 5G services and more than 60 deploying or launching 5G standalone networks, it is clear that the future of mobile technology is firmly rooted in the advancement of 5G technology.
