La Francophonie Deploys Elections Observer Team to Congo Republic

The elections calendar day in the Republic of Congo is close enough as Citizens prepare to pick the next President of the country.
“At the request of the Congolese authorities, the Secretary-General of the Francophonie, Louise Mushikiwabo has deployed an electoral observation mission in the Republic of the Congo to support the electoral process with a view to strengthening the Rule of Law and democracy in the Republic of the Congo. The mission is led by the former Prime Minister of #Guinea, Mohamed Béavogui,” La Francophonie organization said.
Presidential elections are scheduled to be held in the Republic of the Congo on 15 March 2026.
The country of six million people has seen no change of leadership since 1997 when Denis Sassou Nguesso a former military officer picked up arms and dislodged President Pascal Lissouba in a brutal four-month civil war that began on June 5, 1997.
Today, seven main candidates are vying for president. However, considering the mood on ground, many voters are less than enthusiastic about this weekend’s election.
Incumbent President Denis Sassou Nguesso, 82, is seeking reelection. Under his rule, the 2002 constitution and the one adopted in 2015 notably changed certain eligibility requirements, allowing him to continue to run for office.
