Traders in Rwanda urged to improve businesses by complying with the rules of the competition

By Isabella Iradukunda Elisabeth

Rwanda’s Minister of Trade and Industry, Mrs. Habyarimana Béata has on Thursday, November 16th, requested Rwandan Traders to always abide by the Competition regulations in order to ensure transparency in doing business.

The Minister was speaking at the event organized by the Rwanda Inspectorate, Competition and Consumer Protection Authority (RICA), to celebrate the “World Competition Day” for the first time in Rwanda.

The Minister of Trade and Industry said that traders must compete in the best possible way so that they can deliver their goods to those who need them in a transparent manner.

“The rest of the competition is something we need, and we need a lot of traders in various domains. The main reason is that when there is a good competition that is done in a legitimate and clear way, it makes the buyer purchase the product at the best price in a way that is beneficial to him, so you must be the ones to support the competition in business,” she said.

She noted that when there is a competition, there is no cheating.

Alongside RICA as the National Authority for Competition and Consumer Protection, the traders are reminded to act in accordance with the law to avoid confusion that can result in fraud.

RICA Director General Mrs UWUMUKIZA Beatrice said: “Traders have a responsibility to improve their business without compromising on their peers and buyers and the environment in general.”

She added that the rights of the consumer should be respected and promoted in any business.

“The proper course of competition is to disclose information on available products and prices, to disclose their location in the country, to respect consumer rights and also to prevent those who intend to jeopardize the competition.” Mrs Uwumukiza said
