National Environmental and Climate Change Conference Enters Second Day in Mogadishu

Mogadishu,Somalia, June 6, 2025-The second day of the National Environmental and Climate Change Conference was officially opened today by Mr. Ahmed Omar Mohamed, State Minister for Environment and Climate Change of the Federal Government of Somalia.
The ongoing conference has convened environmental experts, government representatives, humanitarian organizations, and other key stakeholders to assess the impact of climate change and develop practical strategies for mitigation and adaptation.

In his keynote address, Mr. Mohamed underscored the importance of World Environment Day, marked annually on June 5th, and called for urgent and united action to safeguard Somalia’s natural resources and ecosystems.

The conference aims to produce a set of recommendations and long-term policy frameworks to protect the environment and improve the country’s resilience to climate-related challenges.
Since the collapse of the central government, widespread problems have occurred across the regions of Somalia. An excessive number of trees have been cut down to produce charcoal for export in order to generate income, without considering the environmental damage caused by the destruction of vegetation.
This situation has led to severe climate conditions in the country, which have greatly affected the lives of both people and livestock.
In summary, the nations of the world must work together to protect the environment in order to build healthy communities. This is because most of the diseases and disasters facing the world today are caused by climate change and the pollution of air and the environment.
