Empowering Young Women: Masaka Girls Celebrate Vocational Success After Overcoming Early Motherhood Challenges

In Masaka Sector, 60 young women, including single mothers, have completed vocational training in tailoring and hairdressing, equipping them with skills to improve their lives and foster employment opportunities. The initiative aims to encourage self-reliance and inspire hope among girls facing early motherhood and social challenges.

These graduates, who previously faced diminishing confidence due to early pregnancies, expressed renewed optimism upon receiving their certificates on August 27, 2023, after ten months of dedicated training. Their journey symbolizes resilience and the transformative power of vocational education.

One graduate, who became pregnant at age 14, shared her transformation:
“Initially, I felt despair and thought everything was over. But thanks to Women for Women Rwanda, I regained confidence, studied hairdressing and beauty, and now I am prepared to compete in the job market.”

Another young woman, now a skilled hairstylist, recounted her gratitude:
“Before, I struggled to find opportunities after my early pregnancy, but now I can braid, style hair, and do dreadlocks. I am ready to work and build a better future.”

She also highlighted the financial struggles faced by many of her peers, as resource limitations hinder their entrepreneurial aspirations.

Chrystel Intaramirwa, Head of Social Empowerment at Women for Women Rwanda, emphasized the broader goals of the program: “Our hope is that these graduates will create employment, support their peers, and serve as role models. Alongside vocational skills, we provided knowledge about rights, health, financial management, and self-confidence.”

She urged the young women to make positive choices and become exemplary figures in their families and communities.

The Masaka Sector leadership urged the graduates to leverage their newfound knowledge, noting the stark contrast between those who benefited from such opportunities and those who did not. They praised Women for Women Rwanda for their support, emphasizing that the graduates now have a meaningful career and the potential to contribute significantly to society.
