Musanze Leaders Plan Upgrade for Overcrowded Byangabo Market to Boost Local Trade

Local authorities in Musanze District have announced plans to expand and modernize Byangabo Market in Busogo Sector, following growing concerns from traders and customers over severe overcrowding.
Originally built to accommodate around 1,500 people, Byangabo Market now receives more than double that number daily, creating an overwhelming environment for both vendors and shoppers. The limited space has resulted in safety issues, reduced business efficiency, and forced many traders to operate outside designated market stalls.
“We acknowledge the challenge and are prioritizing the expansion of Byangabo Market,” said Musanze District Mayor Claudien Nsengimana. “It’s one of the most active trading hubs in the area, and its current state no longer meets the demands of the growing population.”
The market’s congestion has especially affected vendors like Clarisse Nyirahabimana, who says business has become increasingly difficult. “There’s constant crowding. Theft is a major concern, and customers can’t even reach us easily due to the narrow pathways,” she noted.
Others, like fruit and vegetable vendor Patrick Nshimiyimana, have resorted to selling on the market’s verandas or along nearby roads. “We didn’t want to work outside, but space constraints left us with no choice,” he said.
Shoppers are equally frustrated. Solange Mukamana, a frequent customer, described the experience as chaotic. “It’s hard to move around. You’re constantly pushed, and you worry about your safety and your belongings,” she said.
In response, district officials say they are engaging with development partners to design a modern market facility that will better support local economic activity while ensuring safety, comfort, and order for all users. The proposed upgrade is expected to not only ease congestion but also strengthen the market’s role in boosting livelihoods across the region.
