President Kagame Urges Rwandans to Draw Strength from History and Forge Ahead with Development
During a recent symposium organized by the Unity Club, President Paul Kagame delivered a powerful address urging Rwandans to confront their nation’s painful past while actively working toward its future development. Speaking to an audience of over 1,500 participants, which included senior government officials and young people, the President emphasized the critical importance of preserving national unity.
In his remarks regarding the history of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, President Kagame advised citizens not to be ashamed of Rwanda’s painful history, but rather to embrace it and draw strength from it. He directly addressed those who attempt to defame Rwanda and downplay the genocide, noting that such individuals are often burdened by the shame of what they or their family members personally did. According to the head of state, these detractors refuse to accept the past, even though acknowledging reality is the “only path toward moving forward and only real remedy”.
President Kagame firmly stated that Rwanda cannot be held hostage by people who attempt to twist history to fit their own narratives rather than accepting what truly happened. He issued a warning to individuals who persist in distorting the truth, pointing out that the nation has patiently engaged with them and offered everyone ample opportunity to change and reject the “path of evil”.
Shifting the focus to the country’s trajectory, the President called on Rwandans to concentrate on activities that drive national development forward, rather than being distracted by those who speak negatively about the nation. He took the opportunity to commend the country’s security institutions for their vital role in advancing this development and fostering national unity.
Furthermore, President Kagame reiterated the need to wholly reject all forms of discrimination, stressing that it serves no benefit to the country and only hinders progress. Concluding his address, he emphasized that building a strong Rwanda requires the active contribution of every individual. He called upon all citizens to make deliberate choices that safeguard the interests of the country and its people, ensuring a united and prosperous future.
