Umulisa, Shimirwa, and Young Person Seeking Meals Draw Notice After Kagame’s Youth Session

President Paul Kagame during the Interactions with the Youth. Kigali, 21 October, 2026

KIGALI — In the day after President Paul Kagame’s meeting with more than 10,000 young people at BK Arena, three participants have stood out more than others in local coverage and on social media: tennis champion Joselyne Umulisa, Shimirwa Palemo, who described recovering from addiction, and a young person who asked for help securing proper meals.

Umulisa, a seven-time national tennis champion and founder of the Tennis Rwanda Children’s Foundation, thanked Kagame and requested land to expand tennis facilities for young players. The Rwanda Broadcasting Agency later shared Kagame’s response. Already known as a genocide survivor who has spoken about using the sport to heal from trauma, Umulisa’s specific request for infrastructure has circulated in clips since the event.

Shimirwa Palemon, from Rubaya Sector in Gicumbi District, recounted moving from involvement with drugs and the illicit drink known as kanyanga to learning a trade and competing in a national youth entrepreneurship program. Outlets and accounts highlighted his story as a direct illustration of Kagame’s emphasis on personal responsibility and rejecting normalized alcohol and drug use. His testimony has resonated because it matches the core message that lasting change depends on individual choice.

A separate moment that has also drawn attention involves a young person who asked Kagame for help obtaining proper meals, saying he could not afford to provide for himself. Clips of the exchange have spread, with some posts noting the directness of the request. While it has not generated the same volume of commentary as the other two stories, it has been shared as an example of the open format of the session, in which participants raised everyday concerns alongside broader issues.

Other contributions, including questions about business standards, TVET programs, and inclusion, have appeared in reflections but have not attracted the same sustained notice. On X, discussion of #MeetThePresident remains largely supportive of Kagame’s calls to prioritize health and discipline, with the individual stories of Umulisa, Shimirwa, and the request for meals traveling farther than general commentary on the gathering.

As coverage continues, these three moments—an established sports figure seeking practical support, a recovery story tied to the event’s main theme, and a straightforward appeal for basic needs—have emerged as the clearest points of individual attention so far.
