The General Assembly kicks off Tomorrow 24th September 2018.

The annual United Nations General Assembly is the occasion for world leaders to gather at UN Headquarters to discuss global issues.

The theme for the general Assembly this year is “Making the United Nations relevant to all people: global leadership and shared responsibilities for peaceful, equitable and sustainable societies”

TOPAFRICANEWS has learnt that during the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly, world leaders will launch a new partnership to guarantee quality education, training or jobs to every young person by 2030.

The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres; the President of Rwanda Paul Kagame; the Chairman of the World Bank Group, Jim Yong Kim; the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini; the UNICEF Director-General, Henrietta Fore; the UN Secretary-General’s Youth Envoy, Jayathma Wickramanayake; Unilever CEO, Paul Polman; the UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Lilly Singh; and the pop group BTS are among the global leaders, the world, the economy, education and youth who join Generation Unlimited who will participate in an event tomorrow at 12 at the United Nations headquarters in New York City to launch the partnership.

According to research, if urgent investments on education and vocational training are not done, the rapidly growing global population of young people and adolescents – which by 2030 will reach 2 billion – will continue to be unprepared and unqualified as a future labor force.

There are more than 200 million young people of primary and secondary school age who are not currently attending school, instead of contributing to fair progress; these young people – especially the most disadvantaged – could face a future of greater deprivation and discrimination.

Generation Unlimited – part of the United Nations Secretary General’s Youth 2030 Strategy – will integrate and implement existing programs that support teenagers and young people.

The partnership platform will focus on three key areas: secondary education; skills for learning, employment and decent work; and empowerment.

The Youth Challange initiative, in 16 countries worldwide, this year asks young people to participate to create solutions that will support the three key areas of Generation Unlimited.

“All our hopes for a better world are on the young,” said the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres.

“In the world lives the biggest generation of young people ever – 1.8 billion. Sustainable development, human rights, peace and security can only be achieved if we allow these young people to be leaders, and allow them to release their full potential.

“Let’s make this happen: we ensure that every young woman and man find their place in society – through education, training or good work – by 2030. This is Generation Unlimited, and I am proud that the Union European is part of it with UNICEF “, said Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

“The demographic changes that the world is experiencing, combined with rapid technological advances, represent a fundamental moment in history. If we act wisely and quickly, we can create a qualified group of young people better prepared to create sustainable economies and peaceful and prosperous societies. Today, young people represent 25% of the world’s population, but 100% of the future. We cannot afford to disappoint them, “said UNICEF Director-General Henrietta Fore.
