The National Youth Council has asked youth representatives in Kamonyi district to put much effort in fighting drug abuse and teenage pregnancies which are among obstacles to development.

Kamonyi as other districts countrywide has a serious problem of teenage pregnancies whereby at least 334 girls are the victims today.

Among the performance contracts ( Imihigo) of the youth, they have to decrease the number of early pregnancies cases.

The Executive Secretary of National Youth Council, Mwesigwa Robert, during a two day General Assembly of the Youth Council in this district, on 30-31 May 2019, asked representative of youth from the Cell level to the district to partner with local leaders to end drug abuse and teenage pregnancies.

“You know that drug abuse and teenage pregnancies are serious problems that hinder development at family level as well as at the national level. Everyone knows the situation in his/ her respective sector, so, you have to play your role to end these.” Mwesigwa said.

He added “We need the youth with positive mind, good vision and this is impossible whenever the young people are using drugs and welcome other things that kill their dreams.”

The NYC coordinator in Kamonyi district, Rugwiro Gahamanyi David promises their role in fighting against drug abuse and teenage pregnancies because they are among their pledges.

“It’s our responsibilities and it’s possible by helping the youth to change their mind starting on the Village level and schools. They need to get much knowledge about reproductive health because lack of such knowledge can lead to undesirable pregnancy.”

Uwiyoboye Amina, the coordinator of NYC from Nyarubaka Sector said they educate the youth about negative effects of undesirable pregnancies such school dropout, poverty, family conflicts through the testimonies of the affected teen mothers.

There are at least 337 teen mothers in Kamonyi district today.
