Salesians strive to move from financial aid to self-financing

While the world is developing very rapidly and the countries of the African continent are trying to become self-financing, like Rwanda, for example, the Salesians of Don Bosco in Great Lakes Africa with the Provincial House in Kigali, are studying how to use existing resources to create self-financing means without persistent dependence on external aid.

This was debated on Friday, September 13, 2019 during a meeting of Salesian economers from the Great Lakes region normally from Burundi, Uganda and Rwanda.

Brother Hubert Twagirayezu, the AGL-Provincial Economer and Director of Don Bosco’ Planning and Development Office explains that such Meeting of Economers is organized every year as part of the capacity building for local administrators for Rwanda, Burundi & Uganda.

Brother Hubert revealed that although the meeting focused on various topics including long term sustainability, Fundraising, Good management and practices, Identity of Planning and Development Offices and New procedures at provincial level, however, he noted,  the main emphasis was put on the Salesians Provincial Identity and new procedures for Province’s auto-financing initiatives.

“This conference is organized each year at the level of the province of Great Lakes Region, and this year we have focused on ways that can lead us to self-financing without always depending on external funding”, Br. Hubert said.

He added that they have identified some areas where the Salesians for instance can work with regional Governments in some areas and creating partnership with Local NGOs to implement some projects that can bring positive change among communities.

On the question of self-financing and the Volunteer Work of Salesians, Brother Hubert explained that the objective of self-financing is not to accumulate the money on the Salesian Bank accounts, yet it is to seek funding to continue the work of training young people in the countries of the region and in the end to have a well-educated generation who can also contribute their experience in the development of their countries.

He noted that the reason why Salesians help the youth is that the later are the engine of the development of their countries.

Salesians of Don Bosco have been in Great Lakes Region for over 50 years serving young people in education, social and evangelization programs starting from Rwanda (1954), Burundi (1962), and Uganda (1985)
