Rwanda makes another step towards Access to Published Works for Persons with Visual Impairment

Rwanda’s ambassador to Switzerland, Liechtenstein, the Holy See and Slovenia Mrs. Rwakazina Marie Chantal has handed over to Mr. Doren Tang, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization the instrument of Rwanda’s accession to Marrakesh Treaty to Facilitate Access to Published Works for Persons who are Blind, Visually Impaired or Otherwise Print Disabled.

The ceremony which took place on Monday, 26th November, 2021 was followed by a meeting between Mrs. Rwakazina and Mr. Daren Tang.

The meeting focused on expanding the access of visually impaired persons in Rwanda to cultural and other information including published works.

The Marrakesh Treaty boosts access to specially-adapted books for persons who are visually impaired or print disabled – expanding their learning, education and leisure opportunities.

The WIPO-administered Marrakesh Treaty makes the production and international transfer of specially-adapted books for people with blindness or visual impairments easier. It does this by establishing a set of limitations and exceptions to traditional copyright law.

The Marrakesh Treaty was adopted on June 27, 2013, and entered into force on September 30, 2016.
