Regional High-level Conference on the Fight Against Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants

Follow-Up of the Niamey Declaration – Dakar, Senegal, 10,11 and 12 May 2022
DAKAR, Senegal, May 5, 2022/ — The Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Senegal and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) (www.UNODC.org), Regional Office for West and Central Africa are co-organizing the Regional High-Level Conference on the Fight against Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants, as part of the follow-up of the Niamey Declaration, with the financial support of the European Union. The event will take place from May 10 to 12, 2022 in Dakar.

This regional meeting aims to bring together high-level representatives and focal points of countries party to the Niamey Declaration, as well as member organizations and technical partners in order to discuss the various advances in the fight against human trafficking and smuggling of migrants as stated in the recommendations of the Niamey Declaration. The meeting will also enable to validate the next steps for the consolidation of the Permanent Mechanism and the monitoring of the commitments of the Niamey Declaration.

Several interior and foreign ministers from West African and European countries, as well as the European Union and international organizations, met on March 16, 2018 and adopted the Niamey Declaration, in Niger. It aims to improve the coordination and operational efficiency of responses in the fight against smuggling of migrants and human trafficking between countries of origin, transit and destination, namely by strengthening data collection, international judicial cooperation and law enforcement cooperation.

UNODC acts as the Secretariat for the Permanent Follow-up Mechanism to the Niamey Declaration as guardian of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNCTOC) and its additional protocols (https://bit.ly/3sh8dnn).
