Climate Justice, Deforestation Measures Underscore Biden Administration’s Commitment to Environmental Action

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 20, 2023) — President Joe Biden’s pledge to invest $1 billion in the Green Climate Fund, per his administration’s commitments at COP27, and to take other measures to reduce deforestation abroad and achieve a 1.5°C limit on global warming are all welcome news — and provide a strong foundation for additional climate and environmental justice actions.

“In the United States and around the world, the people and wildlife suffering first and worst from climate-fueled unnatural disasters and toxic pollution are often the least responsible for the climate crisis. President Biden’s commitments to the Green Climate Fund, support for halting deforestation in the Amazon, and reducing carbon emissions at home and abroad are a good starting point and way to honor U.S. commitments at COP27 last year,” said Mustafa Santiago Ali, executive vice president of the National Wildlife Federation. “We still have an immense amount of work to do on climate justice, and we look forward to working with the president and Congress to continue to take concrete steps to turn their commitments into action.”
