Bobi Wine’s Documentary “The People’s President” Nominated for Oscars Award
A documentary about Ugandan singer-turned-politician Bobi Wine’s opposition campaign against President Yoweri Museveni’s regime has received an Oscar nomination.
Bobi Wine: The People’s President is up for best documentary feature film, alongside four other films, including the Tunisian documentary Four Daughters.
Bobi Wine said on X, “It is such a humbling moment to see the Ugandan story make it to the Academy Awards – the most prestigious and significant awards in the world.”
He added, “Today the fight for democracy in Uganda and around the world lives on. Thank you for this recognition!”
Bobi Wine, real name Robert Kyagulanyi, lost to President Museveni in the 2021 presidential election. Allegations that the vote was rigged sparked nationwide protests by opposition supporters.
Human rights organizations claim that security forces killed dozens of protestors and arrested thousands more during the election period.
Bobi Wine has been arrested and detained several times for criticising President Museveni’s rule.
On Tuesday, security forces lifted a five-day blockade of his home.
Security forces had taken the action to prevent the opposition politician from joining a planned protest. Critics accuse President Museveni, who has led Uganda since 1986, of stifling dissent.
